At Google I/O 2018, Google introduced a series of new features related to AI, Google Assistant, and Android OS.
The annual Google I / O Developer Conference is Google’s biggest event. Unlike Apple every year launch new iPhone, Google focuses on software and platform technologies.
This year, AI is an important milestone and Google Assistant will play a more central role in its ecosystem than in previous years. Next to it is the first look at the new Android Developer Edition for Android.
Compose Gmail faster with Smart Compose
This is a new gadget built into Gmail using machine learning to predict what the user is about to enter. It’s not just simple predictions such as address, but also all suggested phrases based on context and user history. This feature will be launched next month
Google Photos AI
Google Photos has received many new features based on artificial intelligence and machine learning. For example, Google Photos can capture black and white photos and then convert them to a color photo. This tool is more meaningful when it can “restore” the family photos taken decades ago
Chat more naturally
Google is rolling out upgrades to Google Assistant to make conversations more natural. Chats can continue with a wake-up call (“Hello Google”). The new feature is called Conversation Maintenance and will be rolled out over the next few weeks.
A new feature called “Pretty Please” will help young children learn politeness. This feature will be available later this year.
Google Assistant interface
Google is rolling out a visual user interface with the Google Assistant on mobile devices in 2018.
Swapping up in the Google app will display an image of the entire Google Assistant history. The new interface will arrive at Android this summer and iOS later this year.
The first Google Assistant voice was named Holly and based on actual recordings. Looking ahead, Google Assistant will receive 6 new voices, including John Legend. Google uses WaveNet to make voice more realistic. Google Assistant will add 30 different languages by the end of 2018.
Google Duplex: Permanent virtual assistant
Google Assistant may soon become a real assistant. During the presentation at I / O 2018, Google Assistant made a call to the hairdresser and talked back to the staff to set up a schedule for the time period requested by the user.
This is not a feature that will soon be released, but that is what Google is trying to develop for both businesses and consumers. The first version will be available to businesses in the coming weeks.
Google News has a overhaul focused on improving the quality of news. The revision will make it easier for users to update the news by showing a summary of the top five stories at the top. Local news is highlighted and Google News is constantly exploring user habits.
Videos from YouTube and other places will be more prominent and will feature a new feature called Newscasts like Instagram stories.
A new Newsstand section allows users to track specific publications and they can subscribe to paid news services right in the app.
The Google News app will start updating on the web, iOS, and Android today and rolling out over the weekend.
Google has released the first Android P version for developers. On this version, the company focuses on 3 things.
Intelligence: Google has partnered with DeepMind to create a feature called Adaptive Battery. It uses a learning machine to identify the applications you regularly open and those that are rarely touched. It restricts the background processes for these applications to save battery power.
A new feature is Adaptive Brightness, which explores and sets the appropriate brightness for different users.

App Action is a new feature in Android P that predicts actions based on user habits. It helps users get things done faster. For example, if you search for a movie in Google, App Action will suggest opening Fandango so you can buy tickets.
In addition, Slice is a new feature that allows developers to use a small portion of their applications displayed in different places. For example, when you search for a hotel on Google, it opens a Booking.com section that allows users to start the booking process without leaving the search screen. It’s like a widget, but inside another app instead of on the home screen.
Simplicity: First, navigation on Android P has been remade. Swipe up on the small home page button at the bottom, and the new app switcher will open. Swipe up again and the application drawer will open. The new multitasker is horizontal and looks like the iPhone’s multitasking on iOS 11.
Personalization: Android P brings some important changes that focus on personalization.
There is a new dashboard showing exactly how you use the phone for the day, which app is used and how long. Users can also limit the amount of time on an app, such as surfing Facebook only 2 hours a day.
The “do not disturb” mode stops the vibration and sound notifications. In addition, the new “shush” feature will automatically activate the “Do not disturb” mode when the phone faces down the table. Important contacts will still be able to call even if “Do Not Disturb” mode is enabled.
Google has announced a new Android P Beta program like Apple’s iOS beta. It allows users to try Android P starting today.
The new “For you” tab in Google Maps will show businesses and restaurants around. Google also adds new “Matched” reviews to show which restaurants you might like based on previous searches.
If you have difficulty choosing a restaurant with your group, the new feature will provide a short list, which users can then share with friends. They can add together more options and make decisions.
New features will be released on Maps this summer.
Android Things and Android Auto
Not only today there have been news from Google, which yesterday heated the event by distributing the Google Play Awards 2018 on a total of 45 applications and games nominated for the awards in a total of 9 categories.
Shortly after it announced the arrival of Android Things 1.0 , which finally comes out of beta to become official as the version of Android designed for the Internet of Things , compatible with many hardware platforms with development resources already published.
Autonomous cars have had a special role at the end of the press conference of Google, but the truth is that Android Auto did not want to wait to announce the news of the operating system for cars connected with Android base, which will continue giving prominence to Assistant with new interface and improvements in searches.
Upgrade to Google Lens
Google is working on a new compelling feature that combines cameras with Street View Google Maps to create an AR experience in Google Maps.
Google Lens will also have some new features in coming weeks. Now that Google Lens understands words, you can copy and paste words on a sign or a piece of paper into your phone’s clipboard.
The new shopping feature allows you to point your camera to an item to see the price, the reviews on it. And finally, Google Lens will work in real time, constantly scrolling through the camera section to provide every detail you care about.
